                               FHFA Acting Inspector General John “Joe” Allen


Joe Allen is currently the Chief Counsel for the FHFA Office of Inspector General. He became the 
Acting Inspector General effective April 27, 2025, upon the departure of Inspector General Brian M. 
Tomney.

As Acting Inspector General, Mr. Allen is the senior official responsible for independent audits, 
evaluations, investigations, and other oversight activities relating to FHFA’s programs and 
operations. The Office of Inspector General promotes economy, efficiency, and effectiveness in FHFA 
programs and works to prevent and detect fraud, waste, and abuse.

Prior to joining the FHFA Office of Inspector General in 2024, Mr. Allen served in the Department 
of Justice for almost 40 years. His assignments at the Justice Department included serving as a 
Trial Attorney in the Attorney General’s Honors Program, an Assistant United States Attorney, and 
as Senior Counsel and Chief of Staff for a law enforcement component.

During his lengthy career of federal service, Mr. Allen earned numerous awards, including the Drug 
Enforcement Administration Administrator’s Award; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and 
Explosives Director’s Award; and the Attorney General’s Awards for Distinguished
Service, Fraud Prevention, and Lifetime Achievement.
